Discussion:
Armada 1700 cooling fan problem

Hi,

I have used BeOS R5 with BONE for months thinking that BeOS was running
the cooling fan on my Compaq Armada 1700 laptop often enough to keep
the temperature at the right level. Two nights ago, the laptop seemed
warmer than usual, so I booted into Linux to check the temperature.
During the boot process, the temperature was reported as 100 degrees
Celsius and the system did an emergency shutdown. I have never had the
Linux boot process cause an extreme temperature rise, so I am assuming
that the high temperature developed during the time BeOS was running.
This post is only a report of my experience and not a request for help.
I am not going to use BeOS on this machine any longer and suggest that
others be cautious if they try. As an aside, running Linux on this
particular laptop requires a custom-patched kernel to run the fan
properly:

Hi I do appreciate this info, however it is kind of weird that
the software must run to control a cooler.
Anyway I am more then interested in running anything but windows
on my new laptop which I should get next week.

What I do need is :
Internet Browsing Email and newsgroups
( that doesn't have to be one package! )

A decent wordprocessor, maybe a abyword if that is developed
to and extent that is it useable and has a spelling check in different
languages. And the possibility to make customized letters and
can use address labels from a database

A database that can be used with this wordprocessor.

A simple and I emphasize SIMPLE programming tool so I can
quickly do some dedicated calculations. ( QBasic alike )
The faster the better!

WiFi and stuff like "backtrack" for wifi sniffing should
be nice too, and drivers for the nowadays use "wide screens"

I really don't know what to choose for linux flavor, the list
is endless and advise "see if it fit your needs" would take
at least 50 years or so to chek them out.

And about installing I don't like it -to put it mildly-
if any OS destroys my boot sector and there is no way but formatting
the disk to get rid of it again. (like some Linux flavors do ).
I much more like to install it, and start it with GAG, so that I later
can decide to keep or remove it again.
Should I divide my harddrive in two virtual disks before installing
Linux?
(For some stuff I keep windows beside it )

Can you advise me what Linux version I should give a try,
and if the above mentioned things are available?
BTW I prefer a real Hdrive installation above a live CD.

Yeah....theres a version that some guy in poland developed that you can find in the comments section of BeBits...theres a link to a polish webpage but its FTP and demands a user name an password to download :(

But the Abiword site shows its lack of participation in BeOS development, sadly.

Hi you're welcome.
I am sorry to say but I have just about had it with BeOS, mostly because
there is no browser available which can handle all those bloody plugin stuff.
Way to many times I see an empty page or a page filled with :
"download the pugin"

Seamonkey is very slow on an older computer and cannot even
print a webpage.
It cannot print an email and it cannot print a news message.
Not sure if it can combine newsgroup messages ( don't think so )
and it crashes sometimes.
BTW
I do love Mail-It with is perfect for me, and very much
like "newsreader" but that sometimes crashes too on sertain messages
and have a few other bugs. But the layout and is the best I
ever saw in any newsreader under any OS.

Well, many sages have commented that there is no real happiness to be
found in the phenomenal world.

On a more practical note, you will need at least two partitions for
Linux, one for the actual installation and one for the swap partition.
If Windows is using the entire disk, then you will have to resize the
Windows installation to create free space on the disk so you can create
the Linux partitions. Resizing the Windows install can be interesting
and, if done improperly, make it difficult or impossible to boot into
Windows (speaking from personal experience.)

If your disk already has free space, then back up your data, choose a
Linux distribution and jump in. I doubt it is possible to find the
correct Linux distribution the first time around, so you will probably
install several before you find one you like. Having used Debian for 5
years and having installed Slackware 11 (the latest) just to take a
look, I don't think either of them are a good choice for one's first
install.

I could not find any notes about it, I do remember my system crashed
here with the mass storage USB from Siarzhuk Zharski.
In the readme there is a workaround for that which works fine here.
So I do hope that you have this mass storage thing installed and
that is causing your system to crash. ( I installed the USB patch on

LOL Hey I am, just installed xandros on my new laptop.
OK no sound, no wide screen display but it works.
Tried to copy a hidden partition which "windows/Asus "
put on it. It works too, one little detail, it takes about
half an hour or more to copy 4 Gig, that is to say
the whole disk is 4 gig, and there is penty space left :-)

I hope I can copy normal files a little quicker under Linux
if not I try "Backtrack" Do you know backtrack?

About the USB patch again, as I said it never crashed the whole
system here. What did crash was the USB mass storage thing and
that is documented.
So see if you have that installed and remove it first.

True but your obvious not a user of the latest windows
products. In windows one cannot see the hidden partition,
let alone burn it.
You cannot even get an other OS beside it, or very very
difficult, we only get a restore CD/DVD which formats the
whole hard drive and make it windows only!!
In many cases we don't even get a CD at all.
Thanks very much again Billy

Under linux xandrOS it is all extreme slow DVD player
crashes every time the fonts and text in the DVDplayer
tool are about 0.8 mm in hight, very clever. LOL
I did not even try the DVD burner yet ( under linux ).
I deleted that xandros again, but it ruined my boot
partition.
Yes I did install it on an other partition on his
own virtual hdrive and made that one active.

BTW
Backtrack is a live Linux version with all the WiFi
sniffers and tools on board.

I hope it is, for this reason and others I wanted to make
my own installable BeOS version like the BeOSMAX with
usb patches AMD and other CPU patches and sssshhh .(..bone )
installed. That would save me a lot of time experimenting
on other computers. My laptop has only USB no serial or Ps2

I cannot reach since there is no mouse.
Not done that...........yet.

LOL Hey I am, just installed xandros on my new laptop.
OK no sound, no wide screen display but it works.
Tried to copy a hidden partition which "windows/Asus "
put on it.
Probably some corporate spyware...
It works too, one little detail, it takes about
Post by Edmund
half an hour or more to copy 4 Gig, that is to say
the whole disk is 4 gig, and there is penty space left :-)
Only 4GB? Must not be a new laptop...
Sorry not the whole disk, the "whole hidden partition"
How strange. I wonder what could be on that partition...

I hope I can copy normal files a little quicker under Linux
if not I try "Backtrack" Do you know backtrack?
My idea of backing up files is to burn em to cd...
True but your obvious not a user of the latest windows
products. In windows one cannot see the hidden partition,
let alone burn it.
I'd get Partition Magic, then use a diskwiping utility to scrub the disk
and set up some partitions. Install windoze or linux first and use the
boot manager that comes with Partiton Magic to take care of the MBR.
Just a thought.

You cannot even get an other OS beside it, or very very
difficult, we only get a restore CD/DVD which formats the
whole hard drive and make it windows only!!
If you use PM I think you can install from within PM's gui whatever you
want.

In many cases we don't even get a CD at all.
Thanks very much again Billy
Take it back and get a Mac :)

Under linux xandrOS it is all extreme slow DVD player
crashes every time the fonts and text in the DVDplayer
tool are about 0.8 mm in hight, very clever. LOL
I did not even try the DVD burner yet ( under linux ).
I deleted that xandros again, but it ruined my boot
partition.
Yikes.
Post by Edmund
Yes I did install it on an other partition on his
own virtual hdrive and made that one active.
BTW
Backtrack is a live Linux version with all the WiFi
sniffers and tools on board.
Kewl! Very useful if you have an wide open network in your
neighborhood...like me.

About the USB patch again, as I said it never crashed the whole
system here. What did crash was the USB mass storage thing and
that is documented.
So see if you have that installed and remove it first.
Ah...maybe that was it.
:)
I hope it is, for this reason and others I wanted to make
my own installable BeOS version like the BeOSMAX with
usb patches AMD and other CPU patches and sssshhh .(..bone )
installed. That would save me a lot of time experimenting
on other computers. My laptop has only USB no serial or Ps2
so I cannot boot BeOS it end with a window "continue" which
I cannot reach since there is no mouse.
Not done that...........yet.
Everyone has gone to work on the Haiku OS...wait for it or buy Zeta I
guess :)

I thought of that too but since I don't do much with windows
i don't own PM maybe I can borrow it somewhere ;-)
At the moment I have win( yes really ) installed which I need
for my garmin GPS, next I want to make sure I backup my
MBR ( how?) before I try more linux flavors.
I will check PM and all try it first on a desktop.

Thought of that too, but this will not help me to get rid
of Billies disease, some Mac software including the browser
is made by microsoft. So no reason to buy a Mac anymore.

Haiku is definitely something to look forward to, unfortunately
I cannot contribute by programming or anything.
Zeta......'ve been there done that, no thanks.

Well I don't know, Mac had his own browser and AFAIK
Mac is only alive while Billy has "donated" some
pocket change to Mac. I do not think Billy will give
anything away for free. He wants to run Microsoft on
every computer in the world.

It has been some time but it was disappointment after disappointment.
As I said here before, my adaptec 2940UW Scsi controller which is
supported under about every BeOS version wasn't supported under
Zeta anymore. ( they got it fixed now ) The installer can't install
Zeta to other disks like every other BeOS version can, restarting
network which is a charm under BeOS is gone in Zeta.
Printer support is poor not documented and they have several
printer steering programs in zeta. ( Cups which doesn't work.)
The list with supported hardware isn't right, the feedback is
very poor and it is not like BeOS at all.
BeOS software like pStudio doesn't work under zeta( according to YT)
and they have a new Video editing program, which doesn't work either :-)
It is like Linux they try to invent the wheel again and they
are porting poor working Linux stuff to zeta.
The very very first thing they must do if they want to sell
anything is making or buying a decent browser, and they still
haven't done that.
They are working on multiuser stuff, so IMHO they've got there
priorities wrong,....very wrong!

Hi I do appreciate this info, however it is kind of weird that
the software must run to control a cooler.
I thought that if the motherboard no the OS can control the fan it should
run all the time...
Post by Edmund
Anyway I am more then interested in running anything but windows
on my new laptop which I should get next week.
